The Afrolution Festival 2024 with the theme “African/-Diasporic Pluriverses I.” is set to run in Berlin, Germany from June 27 – 30, 2024.
Afrolution is a festival with literature at its core, organised by Each One, Teach One, that has hosted many of Africa’s and Afro-German leading writers in Berlin, Germany since 2018. The event has had panels, readings, poetry performances, as well as events for children and youth primarily at its Each One Teach One e.V. Centre. The festival returned in 2022 after a Covid break in 2019.
The 2024 edition, with Afrolution festival director Nadja Ofuatey-Alazard and patroness Tsitsi Dangarembga (2024-2027), runs in the last few days of June. It is dedicated to Ghanaian writer, teacher, and politician Ama Ata Aidoo and Guadeloupean novelist, essayist, playwright, critic, teacher, and thinker Maryse Condé both of whom recently passed away.
A statement from organisers stated, “We are delighted to open the four-part Afrolution Festival series (2024-2027) with »African/-Diasporic Pluriverses I: Revis[it]ing the UN Decade for People of African Descent«! Here we take the last decade of the United Nations Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024) as an opportunity to reflect on the past nine years, to make an initial assessment and to offer an outlook through the exchange of actors of the UN Decade with artists, intellectuals and activists of African descent. The curatorial principle of the Afrolution Festival remains that of historical retrospectives and future-oriented interventions at the »Triple AAA« interface of art, academy, and activism.”
Those who attend will be treated to panels, readings of prose and poetry, music, keynote addresses, conversations, coffee talks, a beach party, and lots more. For the four days, there will be guests from the host country Germany as well as Kenya, Nigeria, Namibia, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Cameroon, Portugal, United States, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, and France.
