In a dazzling display of Afro-Jazz brilliance, Kwitee, the acclaimed trumpeter and songwriter, transformed LH Prive in Ikoyi, Lagos into a haven of musical splendor. The event, aptly named ‘The Revived Concert with Kwitee and The Elites Band,’ offered an exclusive first listen to Kwitee’s upcoming album, Shadows. As a music critic, it was an evening that both delighted and impressed, showcasing the depth of Kwitee’s artistry and the vibrant potential of his new work.
From the outset, the concert was steeped in an electrifying atmosphere. Kwitee’s performance was a masterclass in musical expression, blending traditional jazz elements with Afrobeat influences in a way that felt both fresh and deeply rooted in cultural heritage. The audience was immediately drawn in, captivated by the rich textures and dynamic rhythms that characterized his compositions.
The evening was structured around the album listening session for Shadows, an album that promises to be a significant addition to the Afro-Jazz genre. Each track performed offered a glimpse into Kwitee’s creative mind, revealing a sophisticated understanding of melody and harmony. His ability to weave intricate trumpet lines with lush, rhythmic backdrops highlighted his technical prowess and emotional depth.
A particularly noteworthy aspect of the concert was the inclusion of an art exhibition and auction, featuring pieces inspired by the album. Curated by the talented artist Mobolaji Otuyelu, known as Mama Dudu, the art added a visual dimension to the auditory experience. Pieces such as Shadows, Rising of the Sun, and Market Day were auctioned to enthusiastic bidders, underscoring the interconnectedness of art and music in conveying profound cultural narratives.
Kwitee, born Okwi Iguwe Godwin, has established himself as a formidable presence in the Nigerian music scene. His debut album Shadows follows his well-received EP Don’t Quit from 2017. This new project represents a maturation of his sound, with tracks that reflect both personal and universal themes, delivered with a confidence that comes from years of honing his craft.
The production of the event, handled by Cytech Productions, was flawless, ensuring that every note and nuance was perfectly captured and conveyed. The concert was supported by a host of notable partners, including LH Prive, Vuga Music, Sprouting Roots Media, Classic FM 97.3, Smooth FM 98.1, Jazz In the Park, Jazz Conversations, The Sunday Brunch, and Jazz4UWBenji. Each played a part in creating an environment where jazz could thrive and be appreciated by a diverse audience.
This pristine event, ‘The Revived Concert’ was more than just a performance; it was a celebration of music, culture, and artistic expression. Kwitee’s ability to connect with his audience through both his music and the accompanying art exhibition speaks volumes about his talent and vision. Shadows is an album to watch for, and if the concert was any indication, it will be a landmark release in the Afro-Jazz genre. Kwitee has once again proven why he is a name to reckon with in the world of music.
