MTN Foundation and Beeta Universal Arts Foundation Celebrate the Best of Emerging Playwrights at Beeta Playwright Competition Finale

Lagos – The MTN Foundation, in partnership with Beeta Universal Arts Foundation, recently hosted the much-anticipated finale of the 6th Beeta Playwright Competition, spotlighting Nigeria’s next generation of playwrights. The event saw the top ten finalists compete for the prestigious award, providing an exciting opportunity for new literary voices to shine.

In a notable departure from previous editions, this year’s competition featured 40 selected candidates, expanding its scope and opening doors for more emerging talents to showcase their craft. The competition aims to empower playwrights to bring to the stage compelling, authentic Nigerian stories that reflect the richness of local culture and identity.

The competition’s top prize went to Olaide Nurat Mohammed, a young playwright from Kwara with strong connections to Lagos. Olaide’s passion for writing ignited at the age of seven, when she would create characters and stories in her notebook, sharing them with friends. Her impressive dedication and creativity earned her the competition’s grand prize, which included a $3,000 cash award, a laptop, and additional rewards.

Mrs. Odunayo Sanya, Executive Director of the MTN Foundation, commended the competition’s role in nurturing artistic talent. “This is the third edition we have partnered on with Beeta Universal Arts Foundation, and we are proud to witness the growth of many budding talents whose careers are being shaped by this platform. At the MTN Foundation, we are committed to creating opportunities that allow young talents to succeed,” she remarked.

Bikiya Graham-Douglas, Founder of Beeta Universal Arts Foundation, also expressed her gratitude to the MTN Foundation for their continued support. “Each finalist becomes part of the Beeta writers’ network, ensuring a lasting relationship and further opportunities to grow. They also gain access to the Beeta Arts Festival, where they can continue to develop their work,” she shared.

The event was attended by several distinguished figures, including Mrs. Solate Ovundah-Akarolo, CEO of Five2 Media; Dele Momodu, CEO of Ovation International; Odunayo Sanya, Executive Secretary of MTN Foundation; Adokiye Ikpoki, Managing Director/CEO of Chairborne Global Services Limited; and notable actress-comedian Chioma Omeruah (Chi Gurl), alongside actress Omowunmi Dada.
